A kris is offered at an antique auction, in which the Amsterdam Tropical Institute is very interested: it is suspected to be a Madjapa kris. Staff member Ben van Rooyen goes to the auction to buy the kris. He notices that a certain Santos, an antiques dealer, is also very interested in the rare dagger. While bidding, Ben falls into a kind of trance, causing him to bid much higher than he is authorized to. When Santos is about to make an offer, Ben experiences a sort of dizziness; Santos' offer fails and the kris ends up in Ben's possession.
The kris turns out to be a desirable object for antique dealer Santos: after the auction, Santos appears and asks if the kris is still for sale. Ben says that is not the case and does so in a more unkind manner than he is used to, because Santos makes an unsympathetic impression to him. Ben has the problem that he has paid much more than the director allowed him. If he can prove that it is indeed a rare Madjapa kris, he may not be blamed for his irresponsible purchase. At night, Ben has a strange dream.
Anne, Ben's colleague at the institute, experiences a certain influence from the kris, which is in Ben's office. She puts it away in a cupboard. Ben's brother Mark sees a Chinese coming out of the front door of Ben's house, who quickly drives away. Ben immediately comes home with Anne and they see that the house is in enormous chaos. They understand that someone has been looking for the kris. During the conversation with Inspector Sanders, the man leading the police investigation, Santos suddenly reappears and reveals that he still wants to buy the Kris.
The ancient Javanese kris appears to exert a mysterious influence on Ben. A few times he had a vision in which a Javanese prince seemed to ask him something. But a man of flesh and blood is also very interested in the pusaka. Does antique dealer Santos also have something to do with the theft of the kris from Professor Smit's house? Through Professor Smit's stories, Ben has learned a lot about the ritual actions involved in forging a kris and about the way in which a sacred kris is preserved and venerated.
Mark, Ben's brother, has to go to Rotterdam for a judo competition. When he gets off the train, he suddenly sees the antique dealer Santos. He follows him and ends up in a Chinese restaurant. Mark recognizes the waiter as the young man who broke into Ben's house. Mark telephones Anne, Ben's colleague, who then calls the police. During a police raid on the diner, Santos sits quietly, but the waiter flees, chased by Mark and several police officers.
Mark saw the Chinese from the burglary in Rotterdam talking to antique dealer Santos. This led, after an exciting chase, to the arrest of the Chinese. But Inspector Sanders has not made any progress, because neither the Chinese nor Santos have released anything. The Easterner has been expelled from the country. When Sanders showed him off at Schiphol, he saw Santos who was about to take the plane to… Jakarta.
Santos left for Jakarta unhindered. Ben and Mark have also now arrived in Jakarta, where they met the chairman of the Indonesian Cultural Mission and his daughter Wati. Santos has contacted the Suryaputra family, to whom the kris belongs. His attempts to sell the kris for a lot of money have turned out ugly. Ben and Mark, who were staying in the same hotel as Santos, had to deal with a suspicious Inspector Maramis, who suspected that Santos had been murdered with the kris, which Ben said was actually his...
Ben is no longer suspected of Santos' murder. And he got the Pusaka back. On the one hand, that is very pleasant: he can now continue his attempts to track down the true owner. But it is less pleasant for Ben that his terrifying dream images have returned. Does Kris really want to tell him something? Ben and Mark have now been visited in their hotel room by Hanindyo Suryaputra, the man who has been following them for a few days. He turns out to be the rightful owner of the kris.
Hanindyo has taken Ben and Mark to a cabin in the mountains, where an old krissen blacksmith lives. This one told of two crises: a good one and a bad one. In the old man's story, Ben recognizes a number of images from his terrifying dreams. It's clear that the kris that killed Santos is a bad influence. He had to go back to his origins, back into the fire. The evil kris was thrown into the crater of the Merapi volcano. But is the good kris the kris with the nine turns?
Hanindyo told Ben about his younger brother Sudjono, who was sent out of home by his father at a young age because of his bad behavior. It is natural to think that the younger brother has the nine-turn criss in his possession. But where should they look for Sudjono? Mark and Wati wandered through old Jakarta and at the end of their journey they ended up in a silath school, where they met the teacher: Sudjono! Ben then pays him a visit, but still has to leave empty-handed.
The first night of their temporary stay in a country house, Mark and Wati overpowered a burglar, who upon closer inspection turns out to be Aryati, Sudjono's wife. She came to return the kris because she was afraid it would harm her husband. Ben could now return the kris to Hanindyo. Mark and Wati got their hands on the kris through a trick with a snake; they want to return the Pusaka to Sudjono; according to them, he needs the holy weapon more to successfully complete the fight against another silath teacher.
Mark and Wati wandered around Jakarta with the captured kris. They noticed that they were being followed by a man with binoculars. With a trick they managed to get rid of the strange guy. Ben, who understood what Mark and Wati were planning, went back to the hotel with Hanindyo to wait for the pair. Sudjono prepares to fight a teacher from another silath school. He is in good spirits, even though he did not get the kris back from Ben. Mark and Wati return to the hotel.
Mark and Wati had to give up the kris to Hanindyo. When he hears about the important and dangerous fight his younger brother has to fight, he decides to meet with Sudjono. The conversation between the two brothers in the deserted stadium makes Hanindyo decide to leave the kris with Sudjono until after the fight. Everyone is happy now, because nothing can go wrong. Only Ben awaits the coming battle with great anxiety.
