"Big Life" is adapted from the novel of the same name by the late Sichuan writer Qiao Yu; it stars Zhang Guoli, Zhang Jiayi, Zhao Tao, Han Yuqin and others. The film was shot on location in Chengdu and used a considerable amount of Sichuan Chengdu dialect. Liu Dong, a repairman, is very unlucky: he became a terminally ill prison inmate in the newspaper because he helped a reporter; he wanted to buy a newspaper, but the newspaper vendor was killed in the wheel, which made him extremely guilty; he helped the finance department to collect the wages of all factory employees and accidentally lost it; he was rejected when he pursued Hong Yu, the widow of the newspaper vendor; the auto repair shop where he worked went bankrupt; he was cheated out of making ends meet while doing small business; and the rented house attracted the troublesome female tenant Zhang Xiaoyun. Although life is bleak, Liu Dong remains optimistic and helps people who are weaker and more unfortunate than him in every possible way: he adopts Yu'er, a street boy, under extremely difficult living conditions; he takes care of Hong Yu's son Xiaofeng; he tries to help his brother who is far away from abroad. There is true love in the world, and good intentions will eventually be rewarded. All the people who had been helped by Liu Dong extended a helping hand, helping Liu Dong find a stable job as a cleaner, and prompted him and Zhang Xiaoyun to come together, and the lovers finally got married.
