Overview
The writer Carlo Lorenzini, aka Collodi, is pressured by the publisher to write a new story for children, possibly a story that begins with "once upon a time there was a king" as it was very fashionable in that period. Collodi, on the other hand, would like to write something else but has no ideas for a new story, until to repair his broken wooden desk, he goes to a melancholy carpenter called Mastro Geppo. Collodi, through his secretary Elisa, discovers that Geppo suffers from loneliness as he lost his wife during childbirth, and with her his newborn son. Collodi, very sorry, takes inspiration from Geppo's story to write his new story; he then gets to work, and begins to tell the story of Geppetto and the puppet Pinocchio. The first part ends with the eventual death of Pinocchio hunted by the Cat and the Fox in the woods (although there is no hint of wanting to hang him), in which Collodi would like to close the story. In the second part, Collodi decides to continue the story as he has the feeling that his story is becoming real, so Pinocchio is saved by the fairy and the story continues.
