In 1327, a Franciscan friar, William of Baskerville, is asked to investigate the unfortunate death of a monk who has fallen or been pushed from the Abbey's parapet.

After a second death at the Abbey, William is determined to find a way into the library which has been deemed out of bounds. Adso is distracted by the presence of the mysterious Occitan girl.

After being assaulted in the library, Adso asks Malachia the librarian for a book on the heretic Fra Dolcino. The grand inquisitor makes his steady and ruthless progress towards the Abbey.

The papal delegates arrive with the news that the grand inquisitor is on his way to the abbey. On examining Berenger's body, William discovers similarities with the death of Venanzio.

The grand inquisitor presents the abbot with a precious gift from the pope. Anna is found wounded and unconscious in the woods by the Occitan girl, who tends to her injuries.

Anna arrives at the Abbey and asks Remigio for her father's letters, but Remigio is found at the scene of yet another murder and is questioned by the grand inquisitor.

Remigio is brought before Bernard Gui, who attempts to extract a confession. William is concerned that Bernard is attempting to implicate the Franciscan Order in the heretical crimes.

Adso asks for William's help in saving the Occitan girl from being burned as a witch. Bernardo seems unconcerned that Malachia's death has occurred despite him having Remigio in custody.
