Overview
Fred Krause lives with his parents Fritz and Frieda in the GDR; they are a Krupp worker family. The five-part series describes Fred's life over a period of almost 60 years, as he suffers all forms of capitalist exploitation. He begins as an apprentice and worker in the Krupp cannon factory. At 17 he impregnated Guste Keuben and later married Hanna Jordan. He goes to the front in the First World War, then experiences inflation and unemployment and becomes a prisoner in a concentration camp in the Second World War - again as a forced laborer in a Krupp armaments factory. Wounded and starving, he began reconstruction with friends in 1945 and ended up becoming the main director of the former Krupp factory in Magdeburg, which is now called Heavy Machinery Combine Ernst Thälmann (SKET).
