
The Last Tycoon is based on F. Scott Fitzgerald's final unfinished novel and is inspired by the life of film mogul Irving Thalberg, on whom the book's protagonist Monroe Stahr was based. The Last Tycoon centers on Stahr, Hollywood's first wunderkind studio executive in the 1930's as he climbs to the height of power pitting him against his mentor and current head of the studio Pat Brady, a character based on Louis B. Mayer. With Stahr as a focal point, the series delves into the true violence, sex and towering ambition of Hollywood in the '30's.

As the Depression of the mid 1930's wears on, studio owner Pat Brady and producer Monroe Stahr clash over threats from the German Nazi government to prohibit any of their pictures from being shown in Germany without certain, specific edits. Stahr is furious with Brady's concession to the Nazis that threatens his pet project, a film about his late wife. Meanwhile, Brady's daughter Celia sets her eyes on Stahr, and a job at the studio.

Monroe's personal life heats up as he pursues the beautiful Kathleen, who pushes against the idea of being a replacement for Minna. Pat Brady's pet project has a devastating debut, forcing him to accept Monroe's help. Celia gets cozy in her role as producer, so Hackett takes it upon himself to give her an education.

With Pat Brady's back against the wall, he proves his worth as a studio head in pursuing film star Margo Taft. Monroe must manage two demanding bosses as Louis B.
