Moscow detective detective Leonid Zharov (Konstantin Strelnikov) arrives in the small town of Belorechensk to investigate the mass disappearance of city residents on instructions from the leadership. After all, over the past year, twenty-five people have disappeared without a trace in Bezrechensk, and the number of missing people is growing every day. Local residents associate the mysterious events with the fall of a meteorite near old mines. A powerful explosion “shook” the entire city, and it was after it that all this devilry began. But Zharov does not believe in miracles, aliens and devils. He believes in logic and common sense, so he communicates with relatives of the missing, trying to find the general circumstances of the mysterious disappearances. However, no parallels can be found. There are no witnesses either. The investigation is progressing with great difficulty also due to the fact that local law enforcement officers are very reluctant to help Zharov, having met the capital’s guest with hostility from the very beginning. A visiting professor of ufology (Dmitry Astrakhan), who is studying the site of the meteorite fall, is convinced that an alien ship crashed here, and the inhabitants of Bezrechensk were taken away by aliens. Zharov tries to argue with the scientist, but he states in all seriousness that he has already had contact with these aliens... Zharov begins to avoid the crazy professor. Adding fuel to the fire is local psychic Alena (Svetlana Ivanova), who was hired by relatives of the missing to search for them. Wherever Zharov goes, he runs into the “witch” Alena. She, as it turned out, also had contact with the missing. Alena believes that they are somewhere in the forest. And Zharov also has a version that people left the city of their own free will. He finds out that until recently there was a religious sect operating in the city, and these people, having abandoned their apartments, actually went into the forest. Zharov and Alena go into the forest in search of sectarians. With great difficulty they find a settlement in a deep forest. But among the settlers there is not a single missing person. In addition, a new message comes from the city about the disappearance of a young woman. And in this case there is a real trace - shoes of the missing woman with traces of blood were found near her house. Zharov believes that a serial killer is operating in Belorechensk, although the operative cannot explain his motives. The local leadership categorically does not like this version, because then it turns out that they were the ones who poorly organized the search work... The whole city seems to have gone crazy about aliens: the mayor of the city intends to develop the tourism business and organize excursions to the site of the meteorite fall. Even the cynical police chief prefers the “fairy tale about aliens.” He believes that sooner or later they will “fly away” and the disappearances of people will stop by themselves. We just have to wait...
