
A gate appears in Tokyo's Ginza district sometime in the 21st century. From the gate pours out monsters, knights from middle-age Europe, and other fantasy-like beings, and they kill many of the citizens of Tokyo. This event is known as the Ginza Incident. The government sends a small group of soldiers from the Japanese Self-Defense Forces to the alternate world beyond the gate. Led by otaku soldier Yōji, they find that the villages in the world are being attacked by a dragon. An elf girl who is a survivor from the dragon's rampage joins the group in their travels across the dangerous new world.

A mysterious "gate" appears in Tokyo releasing mythical creatures that wreak havoc. Itami, who is part of a special JSDF unit, helps with evacuations.

The JSDF goes through the Gate and finds a giant army waiting for them. After repelling the army's attack, the JSDF puts together a small team to make friends with the locals. Isami is put in charge of squad three, which encounters a fire dragon attacking a village. When the flames have died down, the village is destroyed. Investigating the ruins, Isami finds...

After the fire dragon attack, the team finds an elf girl in the village well. When escorting her back to the camp, the team is forced to engage the dragon in the ultimate battle: dragon versus rocket launcher.

Isami and the rest of his group take the refugees to a camp created near the SDF base. They're shocked by their first interactions with Japanese culture, but gradually come to enjoy the food and baths.

Itami's unit agrees to help defend Italica from siege. But will a tactical miscalculation still cause the city's fall?

SDF reinforcements lay waste to the invaders trying to seize Italica. Itami tries to secure peace with the city's rulers, but fails to account for Piña's knights.

Itami is beaten up by the Rose Knights and dragged back to Italica, where a terrified princess worries he'll bring down the entire Japanese army in retaliation. She orders the leader of the knights to "use her body" to atone for this transgression, but Itami is too busy with cat-girl maids to notice her.

Cultures clash as the people from beyond the Gate visit Japan for the first time. After a speech at the Diet, a mysterious group attacks them on the streets of Tokyo.

Mysterious armed men are after the visitors from the other world, and the Japanese Special Forces are waiting for them. But the enemy has plans, and things take an unexpected turn.

Enemies from multiple countries converge on the resort where Itami and crew are staying. Japan has called off its defense teams, and it's up to Itami to get them out safely.

Itami and co. return to the Special Region, where a bustling town is being created around the SDF base. The base has attracted many visitors, including a dark elf who wants to find the "Green People."

Yao Ha Ducy pleads with the SDF to help defeat the Fire Dragon, but to no avail. Everyone begins to wonder what Itami would do in this situation.

The SDF hold a banquet in the imperial capital to try and bribe the senators to their side. Yao plans to do something nice for Itami.

An earthquake strikes the empire, and the SDF visit the Imperial Palace to give advice on relief. There, they find that the Empire has been keeping Japanese slaves. An enraged Kuribayashi beats the Imperial Prince to a pulp. How will the SDF respond?

Lelei's sister, Arpeggio, is jealous of her success and challenges Lelei to a duel, which threatens to burn down the entire city! In the Empire, Zorzal begins arresting the pro-peace faction on charges of accepting bribes from Japan.

Itami's group deal with assassination attempts. With the Emperor bedridden, Zorzal is free to run things as he sees fit, establishing a reign of terror over the empire. The Oprichnina kill Sherry's parents and she is forced to flee to safety, but the Japanese embassy refuses to take her in.

Tensions escalate as Zorzal uses the Japanese acceptance of the Sherry and other refugees as a warrant an attack. The Japanese Prime Minister refuses to evacuate the Jade Palace while the foreign media is in the Special Region. Meanwhile, Itami's crew continues to come under attack by assassins.

The Rose Knights continue to fight off the Imperial Army at the Jade Palace. Shandy discovers the Pied Piper has planned another assassination attempt on Leilei. Pina has been formally accused of high treason and jailed…

A green light is given for the JSDF to assault the capital and protect the diplomats and pro-peace faction. Will they be able to reach the Jade Palace before the exhausted Rose Knights are finally defeated? Itami's group hurries to the capital to rescue Princess Pina. Tyuule goads Zorzal to continue fighting as he still has one trump card remaining: Princess Pina!

Itami and his team launch their last assault on the palace to recover the captured Princess Pina. The empire begins to take on a few face, and some surprising relationships are revealed...
