High school freshman Andy "Fish" Troutner hopes to join the cool crowd as he enters high school. But the lovestruck Fish's most difficult hurdle will be to catch the attention of the beautiful Jess Riley -- who barely knows he exists. Trying to establish their own footholds in the high school hierarchy are his friends, heavy-set Henry Krakowski and the blissfully oblivious Hazard. Also populating Fish's world: his eccentris parents; his older brother Pete, a recent college grad who has joined the teaching staff; oddball drama teacher Mr. Hopkins; and attractive English teacher Miss Eastwood.
Andy finds his plan for high-school popularity going awry after a bathroom mishap makes him a tad too well-known on his first day as a freshman. Meanwhile, Pete starts his job teaching at his sibling's school.
Andy and a classmate agree to date one another in hopes of winning the attentions of their own objects of affection. But when Andy realizes he has real feelings for his faux girlfriend, it may be too late to save the pseudo-relationship. Meanwhile, Peter sends out a mixed message after he begins to suspect Hazard of being on drugs.
Fish begins his political career. Step one: "conquer" Student Council. But he must deal with a take-no-prisoners rival. Meanwhile, Pete asks Miss Eastwood out and isn't happy with her response. Nor is he happy when he sees her with Mr. Hopkins. Adding to Pete's unhappiness: the chores his dad is piling on him.
Andy's plan to join the wrestling team gets the smackdown after coach Pete matches him up against a member of Hopkins' feminist club. Soon, the whole school is ready for a battle of the sexes that looks to leave Fish fried at the hands of a lethal little lady.
