Brian McGuire is a teenager who is forced to move from Beverly Hills to a predominantly black neighborhood in Brooklyn. Brian suffers culture shock when he's forced to move in with his grandfather Harry Clooney, a Brooklyn store owner. Brian is transplanted to Brooklyn where he moves in with his feisty but loving grandfather Harry and finds that life in Brooklyn is different from the sun and surf existence of California as demonstrated by his new friends: Anthony "The Snake" Johnson, Luther Cain and Terrance Dean, and his streetwise teacher Miss Harriet Winners.
Brian attends high school and joins the basketball team.
Confronted with the possibility of failing English and being sent to summer school, Brian wrestles with the temptation to cheat on an upcoming exam. His classmate Terence devises an elaborate plan: a top-performing student will listen in on the teacher's questions and discreetly project the answers onto a wall visible through the classroom windows. Despite the pressure, Brian ultimately chooses integrity and refuses to take part. The scheme is exposed by Ms. Winners, and although Brian doesn't ace the test, he earns a respectable C—on his own merit.
