Maurice Papon, a senior civil servant under the Vichy regime, supervised the deportation of hundreds of Jews from the Gironde prefecture in 1942. After the war, he led a prestigious career as prefect, deputy and minister without ever being worried. In 1981, the newspaper "Le Canard chainé" revealed its role during the Occupation, supporting documents, leading to a complaint for crimes against humanity. After 16 years of proceedings, his trial opened in 1997. Accused of complicity in the deportation of 1,600 Jews, he invoked obedience to government orders and the coercion of the Nazi occupiers, while the prosecution underlined his conscious responsibility.
