Overview
The play tells the story of Master Jianzhen who went through hardships, remained determined, and traveled east to Fusang. He made six trips eastward, failed five times, and went through many ups and downs. Finally, he succeeded in the sixth trip eastward and achieved the goal of promoting Buddhism. Through the life-and-death friendship between Master Jianzhen and his Japanese disciples Rongrui and Puzhao, the play extols the traditional friendship between the people of China and Japan over a narrow strip of water, eulogizes Master Jianzhen’s achievements in spreading and communicating Chinese civilization, and his important contribution to human peace, civilization and progress.
