Zhang Boling was born in 1876 in a poor private school teacher's home in Tianjin. He experienced two education methods. He was influenced by both traditional Chinese Confucian culture and Western thought. He deeply felt the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western cultures. While serving in the Beiyang Navy, he witnessed and experienced the poverty and weakness of the country and the numbness of the people. Especially after experiencing the "Three Changes of National Flags" incident, he completely gave up the ideal of military salvation and turned to the practice of saving the nation through education.
