The treatment of women in ancient and modern times is very different. What is not bad is that women are always trapped by love. This was true a hundred years ago, and it is true today. Being a woman is the origin of original sin, fate, and love, hate, and hatred. At the end of the Qing Dynasty, the Ji and Tong families in Qinghe Town aroused new and old hatreds over the chastity memorial arch. A young and beautiful girl Fang Jin was "ordered by her parents" to be forced to marry into the Tong family to accompany the groom, who was nine years younger than her. Soon, the young groom died in an accident, and Fang Jin was forced to remain a widow by the head of the Tong family, Tong Shanqun, in order to be awarded the Chastity Memorial Arch to honor her ancestors. From her unique perspective, the play describes the overt and covert struggles among the eldest daughter-in-law, the second eldest daughter-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts-in-law, master and servant, and tells the emotional entanglements and different destinies of several pairs of men and women. But repressed human nature always breaks out. With the help of Gao Litian, Shan Fu'an and others, Fang Jin breaks through the shackles of feudal morality and gets together with the one she loves. He Qizhen, the second grandmother of the Tong family's widow, also finds her own life path after experiencing various twists and turns. The play focuses on portraying the images of three widows with different personalities: Fang Jin, who is kind, pure and loves the constraints of feudal morals, Tong Qing, who is bold and unruly, and He Qizhen, who is quiet, weak and scheming.
