Overview
Maruko is a lively third-grade elementary school student whose family of six lives in an ordinary town. There is a father who likes to drink beer and watch TV, a mother who is often troubled by Xiaowanzi's off-line behavior, a serious sister, a kind grandmother, and a grandfather who loves Xiaowanzi the most and often daydreams with Xiaowanzi. In Maruko's class, there are also a group of classmates with distinctive personalities: Hanawa, the son of a wealthy family, Xiaoyu, Maruko's best friend, Fujiki, who is a bit gloomy, Hamasaki who likes to be funny, Ino Taro who always uses the word "poof" when speaking, etc.
