In 1950, Shandong village woman Liu Yueji (played by Liu Jia) received a letter from her husband Zhong Kuangmin (played by Wu Gang) who had been away from home for many years. Since it was an arranged marriage, Zhong requested to dissolve the marriage. Liu Yueji took her children all the way to Xinjiang, met Zhong Kuangmin, who had been promoted to the head of the regiment, and agreed to divorce him. After the divorce, Yue Ji joined the local workforce with her eldest son Zhong Huai (played by Geng Le), while Zhong Kuangmin married the beautiful and educated secretary Meng Weiting (played by Ke Lan). Zhong Huai and Zhong Yang (played by Wang Xiao) could not understand their father's behavior and thought that he was Chen Shimei. After many communications, the conflict was resolved.
