In his youth, Egisto arrived in Brazil to work in the coffee fields of Barão de Jaraguá, becoming rich during the Industrial Revolution by setting up a weaving factory, while his four-hundred-year-old family became impoverished with the decline of the coffee industry. After 40 years, in 1948, Aegisthus bought all of the Baron's assets – right down to his bones – such was his fascination with the nobility, but he was frustrated by not having a title to boast, seeing the opportunity for this to happen when his son Martino fell in love with Isabel, great-granddaughter of the late Baron. However, her father, Miguel, refuses to marry his daughter to the son of a former employee, forcing her to get engaged to Rogério, nephew of banker Cândido Caldas. Miguel also makes life hell for his other son Vicente because he thinks it's absurd that his wife, the modern Lavinia, works outside the home.
