"Cultural Circle" is a 30-episode feature film directed by Zhang Yifei, co-written by Zhang Xiaotian and Zhang Yifei, starring Jiang Shan, Zhang An'an, Hou Guanqun and others. It premiered in mainland China in 1990. The film is set during the Cultural Revolution and shows the family entanglements under the torrent of the times through the changes in fate of three families, Lin, Gan and Lan, spanning twenty years. The story begins in Beijing in 1970. Lin Yi was falsely accused of being a Soviet revisionist agent and implicated Gan Pei in committing suicide, and the two families became enmity. After Lan Hao and his wife failed to mediate, Lu Jie tried to resolve their hatred by exchanging the two newborns. As Lin Yi's family was sent to Beidahuang, and Lan Hao was sent down to help writer Fang Sun publish a work and divorced his wife, Zheng Jiapei and his children were sent to Changbai Mountain. His children Gan Yu and Lin Shu fell into emotional difficulties due to their misplaced identities. In the end, through the revelation of the truth about the subcontracting, the two families moved toward reconciliation in the new era.
