Yura Khmel returns from the army and finds out that his girlfriend Alla has married the chairman of the collective farm. Yura and his friends go to a Komsomol meeting, where he meets Alla and she advises him to leave, but Yura is categorically against it. In the evening at the dance, Yura meets Zhenya. In the morning, Yura’s mother says that Zhenya is not a match for him she has a bad character and was married. Yura laughs. In the evening he meets Zhenya again and she says that she likes him. Yura is elected Komsomol organizer of the collective farm cell. Together with his grandfather, he goes to visit his older brother, the order bearer, and sees how prosperously he lives.
Zhenya tells Yura about his past life. Yura’s mother really doesn’t like Zhenya, she has already found a girl for him. Yura is present at the Komsomol district committee at a meeting where his candidacy is approved. He returns to the state farm and tries to gather the youth into a strong team. Gets into an argument with his father over his attitude to work. Yura notices that his father and the accountant are connected not only by official relations. He talks with his father and he decides to break up with his mistress. Yuri's brother's wife gives birth to twins. Yura, as a Komsomol organizer, tries to delve into the life of every Komsomol member in the village, to help solve their problems, those whose mother does not give money for contributions, those who are forced to take feed home from the farm. Zhenya’s ex-husband comes to see him, but she drives him away and plans to leave the village. Yura returns her and proposes marriage, Yura’s mother is against it, his father and brother support him.
There is a Komsomol meeting, which takes the form of a conversation in which all Komsomol members of the village are involved. Not everyone agrees with the decisions of the meeting, but the secretary of the district committee supports Khmel. Yura and Zhenya are getting married. Khmel has a conversation with the chairman about Komsomol brigades; he doesn’t like that the Komsomol members are given old equipment, and the collective farm chairman considers their idea unnecessary. Khmeli goes to the party organizer, who promises to help and invites them to compete with Ivan Khmel’s brigade. Komsomol members understand that they are in unequal conditions, but they agree. The Komsomol members are constantly putting a spoke in their wheels, and Ivan Khmel’s brigade is being helped. Yuri creates a scandal, but achieves equal treatment. Seeing that due to bad roads there are large losses of grain, Komsomol members of the village gather after work to fill up the holes. Yura leaves to go to college.
While Yura is in the city, Zhenya goes to live with his mother. The father-in-law asks Zhenya to return, Ivan invites them to live with him, but Zhenya is waiting for Yura. Having entered the institute, Yura returns home and finds out that Zhenya has gone to her mother. Yura asks Zhenya to return, but she refuses. Yura argues with the party organizer about his calling to work in the countryside, about the life of young people on the collective farm, he invites him to live separately from his parents and gives him the keys to the state farm apartment. Yura leaves home. At the next meeting, Komsomol members persuade the chairman to organize a Komsomol link to work on the collective farm. The secretary of the district Komsomol committee fully supports the work of Khmel and the Komsomol members.
