"The Romance of Zhengde" tells the life of Zhu Houzhao, the Zhengde Emperor of the Ming Dynasty. He was the only son of Emperor Hongzhi of the Ming Dynasty. He did not like reading when he was a child and only wanted to play and hunt. Hongzhi was seriously ill and wanted to establish a crown prince, but Zhu Houzhao was nowhere to be found. He had left the palace privately and became an apprentice in a coffin shop. Zhu Houzhao did not want to be the emperor. After he ascended the throne, he was unwilling to be bound by various etiquette and laws, so he governed political affairs entirely based on his personal interests. There are many legendary stories about him among the people. Because he admired martial arts, he secretly broke into Juyong Pass in civilian clothes and went to the border to fight; because he loved the prostitute Liu Liangnv, he brought her back to the capital from Datong, Shanxi, and even named her a queen; because he did not want to go to court, he built a "leopard room" in the palace, where he raised tigers and leopards to play around all day long; he gave himself another identity - guarding Zhu Shou, and then let Zhu Shou make meritorious service and be promoted to the title of Grand Master.
