"The Suppression of Bandits in the Southwest" is adapted from the true story of Cheng Lianzhen, the beautiful female bandit leader of the Buyi ethnic group in Guizhou who was pardoned by Mao Zedong. This play tells the story of how after the liberation of the country in 1950, the bandits in southeastern Guizhou continued to dominate the mountains and harm the people. A group of bandits led by a female bandit named Zheng Yaomei attacked the newly-established people's power and killed innocent villagers. Our Southwest Liberation Army used 100,000 troops to carry out a comprehensive suppression of bandits in the Sichuan-Guizhou region. Most of the bandit gangs were surrounded and annihilated. Zheng Yaomei absconded and was finally captured. After reporting to the Central Committee, Chairman Mao issued instructions for leniency. After Zheng Yaomei was pardoned, she was grateful and determined to change her mind and start a new life. She went up the mountain several times to negotiate with the remaining gangsters to persuade them to come down and surrender. He also led the People's Liberation Army to the mountains to search for and suppress the bandits who were stubbornly resisting. Finally, the bandits in Qiandongnan, Guizhou, were completely wiped out, and he gained a new life through meritorious service and atonement.
