Within the safety of the walls, youths are raised in a nursery-style setting by robots. While life there may appear stale on the surface, the children are full of potential and curiosity. In many ways it is like a slice of heaven. The outside world is a hell-scape. It is almost entirely void of anything mechanical and is now inhabited by bizarre, yet powerful super-natural beings. Maru, with the aid of Kiruko, is out there crisscrossing what was once Tokyo for heaven. But after searching for so long, maybe heaven is more of an untenable dream than a potential reality.

Japan has collapsed after the Great Disaster. Kiruko accepts a request to take a boy named Maru to a place called Heaven. Meanwhile, children live behind the walls of a nursery in luscious green surroundings.

At a strange inn, Maru and Kiruko sink into a drowsy slumber. They awaken to something monstrous under the faint light of the moon. At the nursery, Tokio becomes more suspicious of the world around him.

Five years ago, in Asakusa, Robin, Haruki and his racer sister Kiriko had spent their days happily living in an orphanage.

Tokio is taken to see some bizarre-looking babies, and realizes just how little he understands about his surroundings. On a boat with no escape, Maru and Kiruko suffer a terrifying attack.

Maru and Kiruko return to Tokyo to find a neighborhood crowded with tents. When Maru goes off to a game center, Kiruko is left to gather information for herself, and hears a scary rumor.
