The author documents the cultural and social decline of the German bourgeoisie at the end of the 19th century based on the fate of Consul Buddenbrook's patrician family. Big businessman Buddenbrook passes on his experience to his eldest son Tomáš. The younger Kristián is fond of the theater, he is indifferent to the world of money so far. On the other hand, Buddenbrook's only daughter succumbs to her father's rational decision and marries her first suitor, who, over time, proves not to be solvent enough.
