Zezé is a poor six-year-old boy, intelligent, sensitive and needy. He lacks affection that he doesn't find in his family – no one has much patience with him. The devilish little boy goes out on the streets doing a thousand mischiefs. He learns everything by himself, he is the “discoverer of things”. When the family moves to a house where there are many trees in the yard, each brother chooses one for himself – one keeps the mango tree, another takes the tamarind tree and so on. Zezé invents for himself a fantasy world in which his greatest confidant is Minguinho, the lime tree. However, life teaches him everything too soon, and Zezé discovers the pain and longing, as well as the tenderness and affection in the affection of the lonely Portuguese Manuel Valadares, the Portuguese, as the boy calls him.
