In the late years of Kangxi, the Italian missionary Castiglione came to China and used his painting skills to serve in the court as a painter awaiting imperial edicts. Emperor Kangxi, who loved Western techniques, deeply praised the realistic skills of Western paintings. He asked Castiglione to learn the meaning of Chinese painting in order to better serve the court. While studying Chinese painting, Castiglione also set up Western portraiture classes for Chinese painters in the palace. In order to ensure the effectiveness of his lectures, he insisted on drawing mannequins. This incident shocked the world, and the magnanimous Emperor Kangxi ordered that "it is not allowed to draw men, nor is it allowed to draw women." He asked his students to draw naked eunuchs in the secret room. Before coming to China, Castiglione worked in the Portuguese royal family as a portrait artist for the queen and princess. But in the Qing court, he could not paint for women. He was puzzled by this. Kangxi's youngest daughter, the young and beautiful Qi Gege, occasionally walked by him. Qi Gege's lively figure attracted Lang Shining's attention, and he secretly sketched Qi Gege. Qi Gege noticed his behavior and wanted to see how he painted himself.
