
Overview
The play is set in Beijing and eight counties in Beijing in the late Qing Dynasty. It is based on a real person who escaped from the Qing palace and had the word "flower" written on the palm of his hand by the Empress Dowager Cixi. It tells the story of the rise and fall of the Beggar Gang, a "beggar" organization active in the capital during the late Qing Dynasty. On the tenth day of October in the third year of the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty (AD 1876), Empress Dowager Cixi was celebrating her 40th birthday. After admiring chrysanthemums from Meishan Mountain, she returned to the palace and walked to Da Nei West Erchang Street when she suddenly heard a child crying. Cixi ordered people to search for the child. It turned out that the child was Ji Haizi, the child of Cixi's favorite nanny Yu Ma. Cixi casually said: "I wonder where this little beggar came from!" Then, at the instigation of the eunuch Li Lianying, Cixi wrote the word "花" on the child's left hand. It turns out that before Li Lianying entered the palace, she and her child's biological mother, Yu Ma, were childhood sweethearts! Returning to the humble room where Yu's mother lived, Li Lianying used a needle to stab the word "花" in Cixi's imperial book firmly on the child's palm. From then on, Ji Haizi's fate changed because of this word on his palm...
