Overview
9 September 1943: in a castle near Pescara, the Count's residence, preparations are underway for the wedding of his nephew Tonio to Maria, the cook's daughter, whom the boy has impregnated. Suddenly, however, the communication arrives that King Vittorio Emanuele III, after the armistice of Cassibile, is hastily moving with his court towards Brindisi and needs to stop for a few hours at the castle. The circumstance is experienced with particular interest by Matilde, the Count's twelve-year-old niece, who curiously watches everything that happens around her: her mother Beatrice, busy welcoming guests, sees with great amazement Major Ferri, a soldier with whom she was once in love; meanwhile the little girl is fascinated by the figure of the elderly sovereign, with whom she has a very friendly dialogue. This strange event greatly affects the young Matilde, who takes advantage of it to discover the secrets and passions of the adult world.
