One night, the novice Angela finds a baby under the jasmine bushes in the monastery garden that has apparently been abandoned by its mother. She takes it into her cell and looks after it until the strict abbess tells her that the child cannot stay in the monastery permanently. But because Angela doesn't want to separate from the boy and the abbess calls in a doctor to examine whether the nuns' dire fears about the child's origins are correct, Angela, in desperation, simply jumps out of the window into a lake. She is pulled to the shore by the young idler Charly. This is supported by a rich father who is unknown to him, which enables him to spend his time studying with all sorts of frills.
