The Latin title of the work, Missa in tempore belli, commemorates the war between Emperor Francis of Austria and France, whose young general Bonaparte rushed from one victory to the next. In August 1796 they had to mobilize their regiments in Vienna. The subtitle Timpani Mass comes from the striking final movement of the work, which is accompanied by timpani and brass. The dramatic military sounds are all the more impressive because Haydn transforms the music into a feverish prayer for peace. The mass was first performed on December 26, 1796 in the Piarist Church of Maria Treu in Vienna. Haydn was a very pious man who usually ended his compositions with the words: Praise be to God. Leonard Bernstein performed this mass on September 30, 1984 in the basilica in the historic trading town of Ottobeuren.
